On Top is a collection of short stories and images that together explore a story of deception in various forms. The setting is a recently opened used car dealership in South Wales and follows a developing and darkening storyline with three central characters. One day upon witnessing something I shouldn’t have, I was pulled into the real underpinnings of the business and was required to deceive time and time again, until my own true deception surfaced. The work explores archetypes of masculinity, as well as both conceptions and clichés within masculine imagery, and delves into the way in which myself and others around me build and construct identities and the inherent precariousness this entails. Throughout both the writing and the photographic series, On Top enforces a de-glamourisation of masculinity and men’s lives.
